Coinbase Wallet Extension is a self-custody crypto wallet that runs as a browser extension, allowing you to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) and manage your own private keys. Unlike Coinbase.com, which is a centralized exchange, the wallet gives you full control over your assets and private keys. You can use it to access DeFi protocols, trade on decentralized exchanges, and interact with Web3 applications directly from your browser.

Yes, Coinbase Wallet Extension is completely free to download and use. There are no subscription fees, monthly charges, or hidden costs. You only pay standard blockchain network fees (gas fees) when making transactions, which go to the network miners/validators, not to Coinbase. These fees are required by all blockchain networks regardless of which wallet you use.

Your cryptocurrency is highly secure because you control your private keys. The extension uses bank-level AES-256 encryption, stores keys locally on your device, and never transmits them to external servers. Your private keys are encrypted with your password and stored only in your browser's secure storage. Additionally, you can connect hardware wallets like Ledger or Trezor for even greater security.

Coinbase Wallet Extension is a separate, self-custody wallet from your Coinbase.com account. However, you can easily transfer funds between them. The extension is designed for Web3 interactions and DeFi access, while Coinbase.com is optimized for buying, selling, and storing crypto. Many users use both - Coinbase.com for easy fiat onramps and the extension for DeFi interactions.

The extension supports Ethereum and all EVM-compatible networks including Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, and many others. You can store and manage ETH, ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, and native tokens from supported networks. The extension also allows you to add custom networks and tokens, making it compatible with virtually any EVM-based blockchain.

When you create your wallet, you'll receive a 12-word recovery phrase (seed phrase). Write this down and store it securely offline - never store it digitally. This phrase can restore your wallet on any device or compatible wallet app. You can also sync with the Coinbase Wallet mobile app using the same recovery phrase to access your assets across devices.

If you forget your password but have your recovery phrase, you can restore your wallet on any device. However, if you lose your recovery phrase, there is no way to recover your wallet or funds - this is the nature of self-custody wallets. Always store your recovery phrase securely and never share it with anyone. Consider using a hardware wallet for additional security.

The browser extension works on desktop browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and others. For mobile access, download the Coinbase Wallet mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. You can sync both using the same recovery phrase, allowing seamless access to your assets across desktop and mobile devices.

Gas fees are network transaction costs required by blockchain networks like Ethereum. These fees compensate miners/validators for processing your transaction and are not collected by Coinbase. Gas fees vary based on network congestion - they're higher during busy periods and lower during quiet times. The extension provides gas estimation to help you choose appropriate fees.

Most Web3 applications automatically detect compatible wallets. When you visit a dApp, look for a 'Connect Wallet' button and select Coinbase Wallet from the options. The extension will prompt you to approve the connection, showing you exactly what permissions the dApp is requesting. You can always disconnect from dApps through the extension's settings.
